Task 6: The creative economy

Compared to other sectors in the UK, how well are the creative industries doing?

What 'industries' make up the creative industries?
The 'creative industries' of the United Kingdom are made up of a wide variety of different industries, ranging from technology focused areas to more practical, hand led ones. This large list of industries involve (but is not limited to): advertising, video games, fashion, literature & publishing, television, film and music.

How many people are employed in the UK?
As of early March 2021, it was estimated that roughly two million and forty-thousand jobs currently make up the British creative industries. Out of this large number, around seventy-five percent of these jobs take place outside of the London area. This number is out of the approximate total of thirty-two point four million British generally employed people up and down the country, meaning that the creative industries are responsible for a large percentage of employment figures in the United Kingdom.

How much do the creative industries generate each year?
In terms of the financial side of this job sector during recent years, in 2019 the industries as a whole were reported to have gained a gross value for the country of one-hundred-and-fifteen-point-nine billion pounds a year. When this number was translated into an overall hourly number, the value of the industries managed to reach a very impressive amount of thirteen point two million pound each hour, increasing in value by five point six percent when compared to the previous years value in 2018.

What is the growth of the creative industries (comparatively)?
When the numbers are compared and placed next to other industries in the country, the growth of these career paths is very high. For example, when comparing the amount of jobs within this sector to another similar one (this being the digital sector of jobs in the country), while keeping in mind the overlap between the two job types, it is reported to account for around five-hundred-thousand more jobs. In 2018, these creative industries were said to have grew jobs across the country by 1.6 percent, which when compared to the country-wide employment increase of that same year being 0.8 percent, is very impressive. Employment within these industries has increased massively, at a rate of 30.6 percent, much more than the countries average growth during the same time period of a much smaller 10.1 percent.
